Federation English Curriculum Intent

At Stoke Hill our English curriculum has been developed in line with the skills and objectives from the national curriculum. Learning builds year on year and vocabulary has been chosen to engage and inspire the children's curiosity. We aim within our curriculum to reflect the diversity in our school.

Writing

The Federation uses BookWrites teaching sequences across both schools to support the implementation of writing skills from year 1 to year 6. This is supplemented by Read Write Perform and Literacy Shed.

Reading

At Stoke Hill we are passionate about reading. We believe that children should develop a love of reading alongside the skills involved in learning to read.
We teach early reading through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds, which is a systematic and synthetic phonics programme. For more information to our approach to teaching phonics please click on our phonics page.
At the Junior School we have an emphasis on good quality texts that inspire and engage children in their enjoyment of reading. We use the Accelerated Reader programme to measure children's progress in key skills.

Stoke Hill Infant and Nursery School Reading Spine

As part of our focus on ‘Reading for Pleasure’ we have established a ‘Reading Spine’ of high quality books that we consider a ‘must read’ for all the children at our school.

These books have been carefully selected in consultation with the Devon School Library service and consist of a range of stories and poetry that teachers will read aloud and share with children during the end of day story times. We have chosen books that promote and nurture children's love of reading, and discussion, deepening children’s understanding of the chosen texts and extending their vocabulary.

We have included a range of popular classics and newly published titles, some traditional stories and some modern. We have looked for books that are inclusive and reflect the diversity of our school population, both through the text and the illustrations.

We have a list of titles specific for each year group, from Nursery to Year 2. It is our intention that every child will have experienced these highly engaging books by the time they leave us at the end of Year 2. Have a look at the attached lists to see which books your child may be reading this year!
