Year 1

English

Please refer to the Home Learning sheets uploaded on Tapestry to see the most recent sounds we have been working on at school. From these you can practise:
- recognising and reading graphemes in isolation
- sounding out and blending words containing learned graphemes
- reading sentences containing practised words
- reading learned tricky words

You can also hear your child read their phonics book and read their chosen library book with them. As you read together, ask your child questions about what happens in the story, what might happen next and how the characters might be feeling. The phonics books have questions in the cover which may help.

For writing, practise writing tricky words. You could write them big, small, in rainbow letters, in water. Take care to form your letters correctly.
You could also write a diary of what you get up to at home - make sure to use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops in every sentence!
Maths

- Spend some time practising your Maths on MathSeeds - how many acorns can you earn? Use the link below and use the login details in the back cover of your yellow Reading Record.

- Go on a shape hunt around your house! Draw the shape you find, name it and write where you found it. What properties do you notice? How many sides does it have? Is it 2D or 3D?

- Play a dice game, like snakes and ladders, with your family to practise recognising numbers on a dice really quickly! You could even play with 2 dice and add the numbers together!

- Practise your number formation. Think about how you are holding your pencil then write the numbers 1-10 in the neatest writing you can. Make sure all your digits are the correct way round. Can you go higher?
Foundation Subjects

Science

- Go on a plant hunt, which plants can you name?
- Choose two contrasting plants to draw and describe how they are different. Can you label the different parts of the plant?
- Draw and label as many different animals as you can - can you sort them into any groups?
- Can you name all of your senses? Make a list of all the things you taste or smell in a day.

Geography

- Use Google Earth to look at the United Kingdom. Can you name each country? Can you find its capital city?
- Write a post card from somewhere you have visited in the UK. What was it like? What did you do?
- Identify the different flags of the UK and colour them in.
- Make a poster for the different UK countries.
- Make a map of your local area. Can you show your route to school?
- Keep a diary of the weather each day. Can you create a weather report for your family?

P.E.

- Create a dance to "The Lion King" song ‘I Just Can't Wait to be King’.  Move to the beat, think about how the animals move, how does the music make you feel? Put on the music and move!

Below are some links to fun ways to keep active at home.

Computing

- Around your home, make a list of different types of technology that you can find. How does it help us?

- Have a go at painting on a simple paint app. With some help, can you save and open your picture?

History

Interview a family member to find out what has changed during their lifetime. Think about what you would like to find out about.....

- their holidays from their childhood

- how Exeter or our local beaches have changed

- how transport has improved

- how communication has changed, including how devices help us

- maybe you'd like to find out some family history.

You could video your interview to record their answers, or make notes together. You could ask some questions like these:

- When you were little, what sorts of things would you do for fun, at home or on holiday? What were your favourite toys and games?

- How did you communicate with people who didn’t live near you?

- Do you have any photos of when you were a child?  Tell me what is special and interesting about the photo.

D.T.

- Make a sandwich for your lunch using skills such as cutting, chopping and spreading.

- What other skills could you use by helping to prepare the evening meal?

- Write out the steps that you use so that someone else can follow the recipe.

- Use recycling at home to make a junk model. Draw your design first and make a list of what you will need. Make your creation and then evaluate how it went.
